ERR recommends 1895 by Priit Pärn and Janno Põldma

ERR’s Culture Portal recommends the animated film 1895, directed by Priit Pärn and Janno Põldma, as part of a tribute to Pärn’s 80th birthday. The film is available on Jupiter.

One of the lesser-discussed but most intriguing works of Pärn’s prolific career, 1895 playfully reinterprets film history and, possibly, world history.

Dedicated to the centenary of cinema, the film explores the lives of brothers August and Louis Lumière, who went down in history as the inventors of cinematography. It presents previously unknown facts and events from their lives.

The film is built around the idea that film is an illusion, and asks whether an illusion can be truth. This allowed the filmmakers to claim that their version of the Lumière brothers’ lives and the birth of cinema was the most original and unique of all versions known so far. The award-winning film was directed by Priit Pärn and Janno Põldma.
