74 MPs submit Ülle Madise’s presidential candidacy

Seventy-four members of Estonia’s parliament, the Riigikogu, will submit Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise’s candidacy for president, ERR reported. The documents will be presented to the election commission on Monday at 11 a.m.

The submission is backed by representatives of the Eesti 200, Isamaa, Reform Party and Social Democratic Party parliamentary groups, as well as unaffiliated MPs.

Although Isamaa had promised to support Madise, three of its MPs did not sign the nomination. Züleyxa Izmailova of the Social Democratic Party also withheld her signature.

The Riigikogu will convene to elect the president on September 2. The winning candidate needs the support of at least 68 MPs.
