Tallinn water utility warns of flooding as heavy rain approaches

According to ERR, Tallinn Water is warning of possible flooding as forecasts indicate that 50 to 100 millimetres of rain could fall in Tallinn and the surrounding area this evening and overnight.
The heavy rainfall could cause disruptions or overload the sewerage system, said Urmas Kütt, head of pipeline operations at Tallinn Water.
Before the rain begins, residents should clear leaves and debris from gutters, downpipes and storm drains, close basement windows and seal doors through which water could enter buildings. Extra care is needed at properties located below street level.
Kütt also advised residents to consider installing flood barriers, move valuables in basements to higher ground and avoid parking in underground car parks or car parks below the surrounding ground level, where the risk of flooding is higher.
To prevent backflow, residents should check that backflow prevention valves are working and monitor floor drains and sewer connections in basements. Properties with pumping stations should have them checked and emptied before the rain if possible. Stormy weather may also cause power outages.
During the rain and immediately afterwards, people should avoid using large amounts of water, including baths, washing machines and dishwashers, to prevent placing additional strain on the wastewater system. Rainwater should not be directed into the wastewater system, as this could increase the risk of sewer overloading and water entering buildings.
Kütt warned that people should not enter a flooded basement until the risk of electric shock has been ruled out. Residents should also stay away from flooded areas and open manholes, which may be hidden under water.
Tallinn Water said it was monitoring the situation and doing everything possible to maintain water and sewerage services and ensure the drainage of rainwater during difficult weather conditions. Flooding may also dislodge manhole covers, so people should be careful when travelling both on foot and by car.
