Severe rain and strong winds forecast across Lithuania

LRT reports that Lithuania’s Hydrometeorological Service, Meteo LT, is warning of approaching very heavy rain and strong winds. On Saturday, weather conditions in parts of the country could reach dangerous levels, with western Lithuania receiving more than half of its August monthly rainfall in a single day.

Forecasters said a southern cyclone will determine Saturday’s weather. Rainfall in western Lithuania could reach about 40 to 70 millimetres over 24 hours, accompanied by strong winds.

Residents are advised to close windows and doors securely and remove loose items from yards, balconies and other exposed places. Cars should not be parked near tall trees. People outdoors should avoid standing under trees, near advertising boards or power lines.

Residents should also check and clean rainwater drainage pipes and other collection systems, as leaves, branches and rubbish may block the flow of water. Before leaving home for a longer period, they should check that the gas and electricity are switched off, the water is turned off, doors are locked and windows are closed.

Heavy rain could cause water levels in rivers and lakes to rise sharply. Residents are urged to assess possible risks, as streams can quickly become torrents capable of washing away sections of roads or causing other damage. People are also encouraged to check whether neighbours and relatives, particularly older people, need assistance.

Sunday is also expected to be rainy, with short periods of rain forecast in many areas during the day. Night-time temperatures will fall to 9 to 14 degrees Celsius, while daytime temperatures will reach 17 to 22 degrees. Rainy weather is also expected at the beginning of next week, with daytime temperatures of up to 23 degrees.
