Police arrest suspect after woman found shot dead in Zarasai district

A woman was found dead with a gunshot wound at a homestead in Dusetai eldership, Zarasai district, on Friday morning, and police later arrested a suspect in Utena, LRT reported, citing police and news agencies ELTA and BNS.

Police received the report at about 4.38 a.m. The woman was born in 1986.

A large police operation was launched to find the suspect. Officers from Aras, the Lithuanian police antiterrorist operations unit, were also sent to the scene, while the State Border Guard Service was notified.

At about 7.40 a.m., officers stopped a car at the intersection of Pramonės and J. Basanavičiaus streets in Utena. A man born in 1976 was inside and was arrested.

BNS reported that the man was not carrying a weapon when he was detained. His blood alcohol level was measured at 1.89 per mille.

Police have opened a pretrial investigation into murder. The prosecutor leading the investigation will ask a court on Friday to impose the strictest preventive measure, detention, on the suspect.

Police and other services remain at the scene, carrying out initial procedural actions and investigating the circumstances of the incident.
