Madise calls for more joy and unity in Estonia

Estonia should have more joy, humour and a shared sense of togetherness, Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise said at the president’s rose garden reception, ERR reported.

Madise said the Estonian people had restored the country’s independence by coming together at a difficult time.

“Today, my thoughts are with the times 35 years ago. I am very happy that Estonia became independent and that we have reached where we are today. For me, this day is truly a huge celebration,” Madise said.

She recalled that her family had discussed that period that morning, including how they had jointly sent her father, Ants Veetõusme, and Kalju Koha to Tallinn 35 years ago. “No one knew what would happen. It was a worrying time,” she said.

Madise said she wanted to thank those who had fought for independence, acted bravely and made the decision to restore it, as well as those who had been at the TV tower and on the streets.

“In fact, it was the Estonian people who restored independence, and it is wonderful that people came together at a difficult moment,” she said.

Madise said President Toomas Hendrik Ilves had restored the tradition of the rose garden reception and that it had been organised sensitively and well. She said the event brought together children, young people and older generations, including those who restored independence and those who now safeguard it.

“In my opinion, Estonia should have much more joy, humour and a shared sense of togetherness. This is one such celebration,” Madise said. She added that she hoped the reception would continue under the next president because the day deserved such a celebration.
