Man arrested after allegedly striking Egyptian woman on trolleybus

LRT reports that police in Kaunas have arrested a man suspected of striking a 32-year-old Egyptian woman with a glass bottle on a trolleybus. Police also found narcotic and psychotropic substances at his home.

The incident took place at about 10 p.m. on August 15, when the trolleybus was travelling along Šiaurės Avenue. Police said the unidentified man behaved disrespectfully towards other passengers before hitting the woman. She suffered injuries and was taken for medical treatment.

Officers from the Žaliakalnis police station identified the suspect and detained him at his home in Kaunas on August 18. The man, who was born in 1989 and has previously been convicted, is suspected of violating public order and illegally possessing narcotic or psychotropic substances. He has been placed in detention.

Kaunas public transport operator Kauno autobusai said the incident occurred on a No. 12 trolleybus. The driver stopped at a bus stop after the incident, and the driver and passengers left the vehicle.

The Emergency Response Centre said the first report came from a passenger, who said a foreign woman at the stop was bleeding heavily from her nose and mouth. The caller did not explain why the violence had occurred. A passer-by later made a second call.

Prosecutors previously told LRT that there was currently no information indicating that the conflict was related to the victim’s nationality.
