Saaremaa gets a cornfield shaped like the island

Saaremaa now has its own miniature outline in a cornfield, ERR reported. The labyrinth was created in a cornfield belonging to the Kärla agricultural cooperative, allowing fast walkers to circle the island-shaped route in about an hour.

The route is 1.7 kilometres long, compared with Saaremaa’s coastline of more than 870 kilometres.

Kärla agricultural cooperative manager Ülar Tänak said the island’s outline was not cut into the field by a combine harvester. Instead, the shape had been planned months earlier and planted in the spring.

“No seeds were sown in the places where the labyrinth and walking paths are. The seeder and GPS are the work of modern technology, which made it possible to position everything here,” Tänak said.

Visitors can pass through the outlines of Panga, Orissaare and Kuressaare in less than an hour.

Farmers did not expect the attraction to become so popular. The car park was built too small, and the number of cars has continued to grow.

“It just seemed interesting to come and look around and walk through the route,” visitor Hanna said.

Tänak estimated that the cornfield could remain open until around mid-October.
