Municipal police in Ķekava Municipality detained four refugees on the Riga bypass and handed them over to the State Border Guard on Tuesday morning, LSM reported. The men are suspected of being from Cameroon.
A resident told Ķekava municipal police that several men had tried to throw themselves at a car and cause a traffic accident. Officers went to the area between the Daugmale roundabout and Riga HES, searched the nearby surroundings and found the four men hiding in a ditch.
The State Police and State Border Guard were called to the scene, and the detainees were transferred to the Border Guard.
On Monday, the State Border Guard said it had prevented 45 attempts to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally. A total of 9,932 people have been prevented from illegally crossing Latvia’s border this year.
