Kaunas court to rule on convicted child molester’s appeal

Kaunas Regional Court is due to issue its ruling Tuesday in the appeal of Remigijus Jakštys, who was convicted of molesting three boys under the age of 16, LRT reported.

Kaunas District Court sentenced Jakštys, a former mentor who organised trips abroad for schoolchildren, to four years and three months in prison.

The Regional Court heard the case on appeal.

Jakštys has already served a sentence for sexual offences against four other minors. More recently, he was imprisoned for molesting three additional minors, but was granted conditional release in early July.

The decision followed a June ruling by Lithuania’s Constitutional Court, which found that a provision of the Code on the Execution of Sentences banning conditional release for people imprisoned for sexual offences against minors contradicted the constitutional principle of the rule of law.

If the Regional Court upholds the lower court’s ruling, Jakštys will have to return to prison.
