Kaunas to triple places at Vaišvydava school after reconstruction

Kaunas plans to reconstruct the more than century-old Vaišvydava school next year at a cost of 12.84 million euros, LRT reports. The project is expected to create about 350 additional places for pupils and preschool children, nearly tripling the institution’s capacity.

According to Kaunas City Municipality, the building’s area will grow from 2,200 to 8,000 square metres. The school currently has 169 places.

A two-storey building is planned on Vaišvydo Street, with separate spaces for general and preschool education. It will include classrooms for preschool children, primary pupils and older students, as well as STEAM and leisure spaces and a library. The complex will also have an information centre, canteen and administrative premises.

The building will feature an inner courtyard with a terrace for leisure activities and events. The sports infrastructure will also be expanded. The gym will grow from 565 to 1,030 square metres, while outdoor facilities will include running tracks, a football pitch adapted for various activities and a basketball court meeting international standards.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027. The project will be funded by the European Union and the Kaunas municipal budget.

Education to continue elsewhere

During the reconstruction, pupils will study at other educational institutions in Kaunas, the municipality said. Preschool groups are planned to move to the Bitutė nursery school, primary pupils to the Motiejus Valančius school and nursery school, and pupils in grades five to eight to the Šančiai branch of the Vytautas Magnus University Classical Education Lyceum.

The temporary changes are expected to affect slightly more than 150 children.
