Riga honours 97 couples marking 50 or more years of marriage

Riga honoured 97 couples on Friday who are celebrating 50, 60 or 70 years of marriage this year, LSM reported.

The couples received certificates of honour at a traditional ceremony. Seventy couples are marking their golden wedding anniversary after 50 years together, while 20 couples are celebrating 60 years of marriage. One couple has been married for 70 years.

The tradition of congratulating couples who have been married for at least 50 years began 23 years ago.

The ceremony is one of the events opening the Riga celebrations. The city’s 825th anniversary will be marked this weekend with an extensive cultural programme.
