Pilgrims arrive in Aglona to pray for peace
The first pilgrims have arrived in Aglona for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Latvia’s most significant religious event, LSM reported. The celebrations began on August 11, with their peak expected on August 14 and 15.
Thousands of pilgrims and believers gather each year at the Aglona Basilica and its sacred square. Services are being held with various intentions, including prayers for peace.
Pilgrims said they were travelling to Aglona with hopes for peace in the world, in people’s hearts, families, friendships and the country. Each day of the celebrations is dedicated to a particular prayer intention. The first Mass is traditionally held for the sick, the August 12 Mass is dedicated to families, and on August 13 believers prayed for peace.
“The world in which we live is very fragile, especially when looking at what is happening in our neighbours Belarus, Russia and Ukraine,” priest Mārtiņš Klušs said. He also referred to tensions at the Latvia Belarus border involving migrants and to intolerance and anger among people.
“That is why peace is needed. First of all, peace in people’s hearts and minds, and also among our people and in our country, so that we can resolve all the issues before us with wisdom and patience,” Klušs said.
Visitors to the services also spoke about the importance of peace. One said they had come to the Virgin Mary to ask for a blessing for their family. Another visitor said their family had been making the journey for 27 years and planned it a year in advance.
“Peace is important to everyone. If there is peace, there is a family, and there is love,” the visitor said.
Another pilgrim, who works with children, said they had spent time in a basement with schoolchildren that year. “It is unpleasant and difficult. We want peace and sunshine,” the pilgrim said.
Latvia’s internal affairs institutions are responsible for peace and security in Aglona during the celebrations. The State Police is working under an enhanced security regime, and this year authorities have prepared an action plan for the possible receipt of an orange level emergency broadcast alert.
