Riga restricts traffic for city celebrations, makes transport free

Riga will introduce extensive traffic restrictions during the city’s birthday celebrations, including closures on 11 November Embankment and in Old Riga, LSM reported. Public transport and municipal paid parking will be free on August 15 and 16.

11 November Embankment closures

From August 11 to midnight on August 16, stopping and parking will be prohibited on both sides of 11 November Embankment between Stone Bridge and Customs Street. The restrictions will also apply to the parallel street beside the embankment on the Old Riga side, between Poļu Gate and Jauniela, as well as on Bishop’s Gate.

Vehicles left in the restricted areas will be moved to another authorised parking space. The restrictions will not apply to vehicles with special permits, diplomatic vehicles or emergency vehicles.

Vehicle traffic will be closed from 6 a.m. on August 11 until midnight on August 16 on 11 November Embankment between Stone Bridge and Customs Street, and on the adjacent parallel street on the Old Riga side between Poļu Gate and Jauniela. Traffic lights on 11 November Embankment and at the intersection of Customs and Export streets will be switched off during this period.

If necessary, two-way traffic will be organised in Dome Square and Pils Street from 6 a.m. on August 11 until noon on August 15, and from 4 a.m. until midnight on August 16.

Old Riga traffic closure

Vehicle traffic will be closed throughout Old Riga from noon on August 15 until 4 a.m. on August 16.

From 10 a.m. on August 15 until 4 a.m. on August 16, parking zones for micromobility devices will be closed in Old Riga and on 11 November Embankment.

Electric scooters, bicycles, cycle rickshaws, electric vehicles and horse-drawn carriages will be prohibited from moving on August 15 and 16 on 11 November Embankment, in Old Riga and at other event venues.

Other parking restrictions

Stopping and parking will be prohibited on the right-hand side of Aspazija Boulevard between Krišjānis Barons Street and Kaļķu Street from 7 a.m. on August 13 until 8 a.m. on August 16.

The celebrations will also include restrictions on the movement of watercraft, according to LSM.
