Scammers target bank customer and car buyer in Lithuania

Scammers stole more than 10,000 euros from a Vilnius woman who tried to log in to what was allegedly a fake banking website, while a man in Utena County lost 3,760 euros in a suspected car sale scam, LRT reported, citing police.

The woman, born in 1951, told Vilnius City First Police Commissariat that on the evening of August 2 she tried to access a possibly fraudulent banking website from her home in Vilnius.

After she entered her banking credentials, scammers withdrew 10,389 euros from her bank account. Police have opened a pre-trial investigation into fraud.

Utena County Police said on Tuesday that a man born in 2000 had also reported being defrauded. On June 17, he found an online advertisement for a BMW and agreed on the purchase with the seller.

The man made two transfers to the bank account provided by the seller. He was later unable to contact the seller, causing him losses of 3,760 euros. Police have also opened a pre-trial investigation into that case.
