University rectors propose Tiit Land as Estonia’s next president

Estonian university rectors and academic leaders have proposed Tallinn University of Technology rector Tiit Land as a presidential candidate, ERR reported. They said in a letter to members of parliament that Land could offer leadership extending beyond day-to-day politics.

The letter was signed by the rectors of Estonia’s major universities, the secretary general of the Council of Rectors Hanna Kanep, and President of the Estonian Academy of Sciences Mart Saarma.

“Estonia faces choices whose impact will extend far beyond a single election cycle,” the academic leaders wrote. They cited a changed security environment, an ageing and shrinking population, growing competition for talent and investment, and the impact of technology and artificial intelligence on the economy, education and society.

They said Estonia needed a president who combined knowledge, statesmanship and a forward-looking perspective, while also protecting the Estonian language and culture, strengthening the country’s defence capability and maintaining public trust in the democratic state.

According to the signatories, Land has the necessary qualities for the role. They highlighted his long career as a scientist and university leader, his academic and professional experience in Estonia and abroad, his previous tenure as rector of Tallinn University and his current role at Tallinn University of Technology.

The letter also praised Land’s calm leadership style, international experience and broad public trust. The signatories said he did not represent narrow interest groups or political divisions, but values including education, knowledge, responsibility, freedom and cooperation.

They said Land could strengthen trust in society, support Estonia’s long-term development and serve as a dignified head of state at a time when the country needed both confidence and forward-looking thinking.

The letter was signed by University of Tartu rector Toomas Asser, Estonian Academy of Arts rector Hilkka Hiiop, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre rector Ivari Ilja, Estonian University of Life Sciences rector Ülle Jaakma, Hanna Kanep, Tallinn University rector Priit Reiska, Mart Saarma and former Tallinn University rector Tõnu Viik.
