Hauka fair draws crowds to Antsla

Antsla, usually a quiet and small town, has been transformed into a crowded open-air marketplace by the Hauka fair this weekend, ERR reported. The fair has a tradition spanning more than 100 years and has brought traders, shoppers, entertainers and spectators into the town’s streets.

“This unique open-air marketplace, which opens across the entire town, is a concept that is difficult to find elsewhere,” fair organiser Alo Abiline said. He described kilometres of stalls offering everything from cars to small thimbles, with visitors never knowing what they will find around the next corner.

Visitors said they were impressed by the large number of sellers and the variety of goods and entertainment. Angela, a visitor from Tartu County, said she particularly liked that American cars were also allowed at the fair.

One attraction gave visitors the chance to have photographs taken of their eye irises. Photographer Kai Rannamees said Hauka was the first fair she had ever attended and that she had continued returning because she liked the people and the atmosphere.

Despite a brief rain shower, the fair remained busy. Visitor Karl from Kanepi said there appeared to be more sellers and goods than in previous years.

For the first time, children were also allowed to practise selling at the fair. Young trader Milona said she had sold soft toys, clothes and a game.
