Estonia’s easternmost sea pier opens in Narva-Jõesuu

Estonia’s easternmost sea pier has opened in Narva-Jõesuu, serving as a 320-metre breakwater to prevent sand from filling the mouth of the Narva River while also becoming a tourist attraction, ERR reported.

The breakwater was needed because the river mouth has been becoming shallower each year. Its purpose is to stop sand from accumulating there so ships can continue reaching the Narva River.

Narva-Jõesuu Mayor Maksim Iljin said the pier, together with the town’s lighthouse and cultural quarter, could support tourism and business development.

“Already during the construction work, I saw many people here from different parts of Estonia and from other countries who had come specifically to walk on the pier,” Iljin said.

The first visitors allowed to walk on the newly completed pier were a newlywed couple, Anastassia and Artur, who described it as a romantic place for wedding photographs.

“There are very beautiful views here, and it is simply an incredible place,” the couple said.

The town’s next major plan is to restore its historic resort hall. Iljin said the city was already working on the project and also wanted to build a large concert hall alongside it.

Building the breakwater, including preparatory work, took more than 10 years and cost nearly five million euros. The resort hall is expected to be restored within five years.
