Lithuania registered nearly one-third fewer births in the first half of 2026 than during the same period last year, LRT reported, citing the Ministry of Justice.

Nearly 8,300 children born in Lithuania were registered at civil registry offices this year, compared with 12,600 during the first half of last year.

Boys outnumbered girls among this year’s registered births, with 4,200 boys and just over 4,000 girls. Last year, the figures were 6,200 boys and 6,300 girls.

The largest number of births was registered by the Civil Registry Office of Vilnius City Municipality, with 2,200. The Civil Registry Office of Kaunas City Municipality registered 896 births, while the office in Klaipėda registered 487.

A child’s birth must be declared within three months of the child’s birth.
