Lithuania explores South Korean air defence procurement

Lithuania’s Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas and South Korean Ambassador to Lithuania Joyoung Jeon discussed possible cooperation on counter-drone systems and short-range air defence capabilities on Friday, LRT reported.

“When acquiring air defence or counter-drone systems, quality and price are not the only important factors for Lithuania. Delivery times also matter, so we are exploring various options,” Kaunas said in a statement issued by the Ministry of National Defence.

“Looking ahead, we are considering cooperation with South Korea’s defence industry to acquire air defence systems. In the field of 30 to 40 mm air defence guns, South Korean manufacturers are among the most reliable and could ensure rapid delivery,” he said.

The meeting also covered industrial cooperation and the possible production of defence equipment in Lithuania, according to the ministry.

Kaunas said Lithuania and South Korea were similar countries because both have a hostile regime in their neighbourhoods and must maintain a high level of vigilance. He said this provided a natural basis for closer cooperation.

The ministry said relations between Lithuania and South Korea had gained strong momentum in recent years, while cyber defence would remain a natural pillar of the two countries’ partnership.
