Storm forecast to hit southern Lithuania from 3 p.m.

A strong storm is expected to affect parts of southern Lithuania on Thursday afternoon, bringing thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail and gusty winds, LRT reported, citing the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service.

Forecaster Simona Dalinkevičiūtė said the storm was expected in Marijampolė and Alytus counties, as well as the southern parts of Kaunas and Vilnius counties. The first storm cells could form at around 3 p.m., although they may arrive later.

More than 15 millimetres of rain could fall in a short period, while hailstones are expected to measure at least 6 millimetres across. An earlier forecast warned of wind gusts reaching 15 to 20 metres per second.

Alerts about the potential storm, hail and strong winds have been sent to residents’ phones. Forecasters stressed that predicting summer thunderstorms is difficult and that the forecast could still change.

Contrasting weather expected

After a zone of morning rain and thunderstorms moves away, conditions are expected to improve briefly, with relatively hot and humid weather. New rain and thunderclouds are forecast to form in the afternoon and evening, bringing rain to much of Lithuania and locally heavy downpours.

The strongest storm is expected in southern Lithuania from around 3 p.m. until 9 p.m., with thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds and hail.

Friday will bring variable cloud cover. Some areas may see brief rain overnight, while daytime showers are expected only in isolated places. Temperatures will range from 13 to 18 degrees Celsius at night and from 20 to 25 degrees during the day.

Brief showers are possible in some areas on Saturday, while the chance of rain will be low on Sunday. Saturday temperatures are forecast at 9 to 14 degrees overnight and 19 to 24 degrees during the day. On Sunday, temperatures will range from 7 to 12 degrees at night and reach 20 to 25 degrees during the day.
