Rescue official warns against sending children alone on SUP boards

Rebecca Charlotte Rebane of the Northern Rescue Centre told Vikerraadio, as reported by ERR, that she would not send children out to sea alone on a stand-up paddleboard, even if their parents remained on shore.

Rebane said anyone using a SUP board should wear a life jacket correctly and attach the ankle leash securely to their leg. She said people often underestimate the risks because the boards appear very safe on the water.

Rescuers are also frequently called when floating devices drift away. Rebane said inflatable mattresses and pink flamingo floats were popular for taking photos, but people often failed to recognise the dangers. Engine failures on boats and jet skis were also common, she said.

Rebane urged parents not to use their phones while supervising children at the beach. She said a lapse of just one or two minutes could make the situation dangerous.
