Lithuania registers 6,200 marriages in first half

Lithuania registered 6,200 marriages during the first half of this year, LRT reported Thursday, citing the Ministry of Justice.

More than 4,000 couples married at civil registry offices. The largest numbers were recorded in Vilnius, with 1,186 marriages, followed by Kaunas with 726, Klaipėda with 285, Šiauliai with 221 and Panevėžys with 134.

A total of 911 marriages conducted according to church or religious denomination procedures were entered into the state records. Lithuania also recorded 1,200 marriages registered abroad.

During the same period, couples signed 1,200 marriage contracts, including 394 premarital agreements and 840 postnuptial agreements. In the first half of last year, 1,143 such contracts were signed.

In the first half of 2025, slightly more marriages were registered or entered into the state records than this year, at 6,500.

The Ministry of Justice said couples may submit an application to register their marriage at any civil registry office in Lithuania. The ceremony can be held at the office or at a representative location designated by the municipal council. If no such location has been designated, the ceremony may be held at a place chosen by the couple.

Lithuanian citizens must also have marriages registered abroad entered into Lithuania’s records by notifying any civil registry office in the country.
