Suspect in Vilnius district woman’s murder hospitalised after self-injury

A man suspected of killing a woman in Avižieniai village, Vilnius district, has been hospitalised after injuring himself with a knife, LRT reported, citing the Police Department and ELTA.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in Vilnius after receiving medical treatment, police said.

The incident happened at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. A man born in 1994 allegedly stabbed a woman born in 1983 with a knife. Her death was certified at 2.40 p.m. after resuscitation efforts.

Police said the man had been issued a protection order because of domestic violence. According to Julija Samorokovskaja, head of the communications division at the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat, he broke a window with a stone or another object, entered the home and allegedly injured his former cohabitant.

The woman had called police at around 2 p.m. to report domestic violence, saying that her former cohabitant had broken the window despite the protection order.

A pre-trial investigation into murder has been launched under Article 129, Part 2, Point 3 of Lithuania’s Criminal Code. The provision covers the killing of a close relative or family member and carries a prison sentence of eight to 20 years or life imprisonment.
