Investigation opened after convict dies at Marijampolė Prison

LRT reports that a pre-trial investigation has been opened after a convict was found dead at Marijampolė Prison, a correctional facility in Lithuania.

The Lithuanian Prison Service said the convict was found without signs of life in a prison toilet on Tuesday afternoon. Officers immediately began resuscitation efforts, which continued until ambulance medics arrived. The medics later pronounced the person dead.

A preliminary assessment identified possible signs of a violent death, prompting an investigation under Article 129 of the Criminal Code, which covers murder.

The Prison Service said investigative steps are under way and that it would not provide further details for now in order not to harm the investigation.
