Labour inspectorate investigates worker’s death at Ogre school

Latvia’s State Labour Inspectorate has launched an investigation into the death of a groundskeeper at Ogre Kalna Basic School, LSM reported, citing the inspectorate.

The technical worker arrived at work on Monday morning but was found without vital signs after a break. Resuscitation efforts were started immediately and an emergency medical team was called, but the worker could not be saved.

The worker had been employed only five days earlier to perform gardening and groundskeeping duties while another employee was absent due to illness.

The inspectorate is examining the circumstances to determine whether the death qualifies as a workplace accident. It said conclusions about the cause of death or possible violations of occupational safety requirements could be drawn only after the investigation and a thorough assessment of all the circumstances.

Ogre municipality said that, according to the information available to it, the worker died during a break and that the death was not connected with his work duties or violations of workplace safety requirements. The municipality informed the inspectorate about the incident.

State Police representative Līga Dziļuma told the LETA news agency on Monday that nothing indicated a criminal offence and that no further information was available.
