Fire damages Kaunas bakery, sends one worker for medical examination

A fire damaged a bakery in Kaunas overnight on Monday, and one of its two workers was taken to a medical facility for further examination, LRT reported, citing firefighters.

The Kaunas Fire and Rescue Board received a report at 4:05 a.m. that a two-storey bakery building on Alovės Street was on fire.

When firefighters arrived, the two-storey production building was burning with open flames. Firefighters wearing breathing protection began work at 4:19 a.m. The fire was extinguished, and two positive-pressure fans were used to ventilate the premises.

The fire destroyed the production rooms, part of the polystyrene insulation on the exterior walls and window glass. Part of the roof covering, which had begun to burn, was dismantled. The administrative rooms were preserved but smoke-damaged.

Two employees were inside the building during the fire. Both left before firefighters arrived. Medics examined them, released one worker to go home and took the other to a medical facility for further examination.

The building had an automatic fire detection and alarm system.
