Tallinn weighs extending airport public transport into night

Tallinn is considering extending public transport services to the airport into the night, Deputy Mayor Joel Jesse said, ERR reported.

Tram services to Tallinn Airport were restored in August, with routes running from both Kopli and Tondi, but the current schedule does not meet the needs of all passengers.

The trams are also used by employees of Ülemiste City. According to the city government, nearly 6,000 people travel to Ülemiste by tram each day.

The first trams reach the airport shortly after 5:30 a.m., while the last ones leave at around 12:45 a.m. That schedule is not early enough for passengers catching morning flights.

“We have to take passengers’ wishes into account. We are analysing this, but first we need to get the routes running, and there is also a period when people get used to using them,” Jesse said.

He said the city’s public transport schedules for serving the airport would be determined by demand. Extending some night bus routes to the airport could not be ruled out, he added.

Jesse said the major road construction and repair projects that began in the summer were on schedule overall. Some work has been delayed by archaeological objects discovered during excavation and by pipes found in locations where they were not shown on plans.

Road capacity should improve by September, Jesse said. The city wants the Hipodrome junction to have two lanes in each direction again by the end of August, after the holiday period, although construction there will continue.

Roadworks on Lauteri Street are expected to finish by the end of August, while repairs on Peterburi Road should be completed in November, Jesse said.
