Man drowns in Nida after swimming under red flag

A man drowned in the Baltic Sea off Nida’s northern beach on Sunday afternoon while a red flag banning swimming was raised, LRT reported. Three people in the sea had been warned about the conditions, according to Gintaras Kuprys, head of Neringa’s rescue service.

The Fire and Rescue Department said a beach lifeguard reported that a person had disappeared in the water near the northern harbour. Two people rescued themselves before emergency responders arrived.

Rescuers pulled the missing man from the water and attempted to revive him, but paramedics later pronounced him dead.

Kuprys said the red flag had been displayed at the beach and that the three people swimming in the sea had been warned.

The deceased was later identified as 30-year-old wakeboarding and snowboarding enthusiast and coach Motiejus Lisauskas.

Asta Kažukauskienė, a spokeswoman for the Klaipėda County Chief Police Commissariat, told the ELTA news agency that police received a report of the incident at about 1:48 p.m. on Sunday.
