Markus Varjun becomes first Estonian to make professional golf cut

Markus Varjun became the first Estonian to make the cut at professional level after finishing eight under par over two rounds at the Infortar Estonian Challenge in Jõelähtme, ERR reported.

The 24-year-old advanced comfortably to the weekend, when the leading 60 players will continue competing. No Estonian had previously reached the cut in a professional tournament.

“I certainly knew I was capable of playing like this. I am happiest that I did what I needed to do. One shot at a time and focus on what you can control,” Varjun said.

He added that playing at home in front of the local crowd could give him a small advantage in the remaining two rounds.

“Once a year, you get to play in front of your home crowd at a very high professional level. You just have to give your best and enjoy it,” Varjun said.

The tournament was suspended for several hours on Friday because of the threat of thunderstorms, leaving some players still on the course.

Ralf Johan Kivi, who started early in the morning, finished two rounds three under par. His place in the weekend field remained undecided.

“It was a proper roller coaster today. After four holes I was two over par, and it looked like it would be difficult. Then I got my game going, made an eagle and followed it with two birdies, and it felt like there was potential again,” Kivi said.

Kevin Christopher Jegers was also still on the course, with a chance of advancing.
