Stradiņš Hospital emergency medicine centre head resigns

Roberts Fūrmanis, head of the Emergency Medicine Centre at Paula Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital, has decided to step down, LSM reported. He confirmed to Latvian Television that he would continue working at the hospital.

Fūrmanis did not comment on the detailed reasons for his decision. The centre has frequently faced criticism when queues of emergency ambulances formed outside the hospital.

Fūrmanis had led the centre since August 2023, after being unanimously selected by a recruitment panel in an open competition. He previously served as vice-president of the Latvian Medical Association, leaving that position in autumn 2021.

The head of the Emergency Medicine Centre is appointed for a five-year term. The centre operates around the clock, seven days a week, with a staff of 40 people. It receives an average of 140 to 210 patients per day.

The previous head of the centre was doctor Valērijs Ratobiļskis.
