Incomplete migrant tunnel discovered in Varėna district

Border guards in Lithuania’s Varėna district have uncovered an unfinished underground tunnel believed to be intended for illegal migrant crossings from Belarus, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) reported.

The tunnel, detected near Pertakas village on Sunday evening, was identified using technical equipment that picked up ground vibrations. Upon arrival at the site, officers observed around 20 men in civilian clothing retreating into Belarusian territory.

On the Lithuanian side, near a stream bank, authorities found an incomplete 11-meter-long underground tunnel being dug beneath a patrol path into Lithuanian land. Wooden beams, likely intended as supports, as well as excavated sand and shovels, were found nearby.

Preliminary findings indicate the tunnel was not yet finished, with no exit on the Lithuanian side, meaning it could not have been used for illegal entry. An investigation into the unauthorized border crossing attempt has been launched. If convicted, those involved could face fines, arrest, or up to two years in prison.

After processing the scene, the tunnel was filled in to prevent further use.
