Algirdas Pieniuta appointed as Lithuania’s deputy environment minister

Algirdas Pieniuta has begun work as Lithuania’s new deputy environment minister, the Environment Ministry announced on Tuesday.

In his role, Pieniuta will oversee forestry policy. He stated his priorities include securing long-term agreement on the future of the forestry sector, ensuring clear forest protection, supervision, and operational direction.

“There is a lot of work and expectations, so we will need to focus on clear priorities. It is important to ensure decent working conditions for people in the sector, to better utilise the accumulated scientific potential, and to protect the public interest when making decisions,” Pieniuta said, as quoted in the ministry’s statement.

Before his appointment, Pieniuta served as an advisor to the transport minister and spent over a decade in rail transport, gaining experience in management, strategic planning, environmental protection, and infrastructure oversight.

The Environment Ministry already has three other deputy ministers: Aira Paliukėnaitė, Asta Rokickienė, and Giedrė Ričkutė. The ministry’s chancellor position is held by Vladislavas Kondratovičius, the former interior minister.
