Two Vilnius prison officers dismissed over intimate relationships with inmates

The Lithuanian Prison Service announced on Monday that two officers at Vilnius Prison have been dismissed after engaging in close, romantic, or intimate relationships with inmates, according to a report by LRT.

Additionally, a catering company employee had their access permit to the prison revoked. The dismissals follow an inspection initiated by the prison’s director and the Criminal Intelligence Service, which uncovered a large quantity of prohibited items in the facility.

During the checks, officers from the service’s Prevention Group found mobile phones, a knife, and other unauthorised items in the inmates’ cells. Some cells were also found to contain quantities of items exceeding permitted limits.

“Although Vilnius Prison has one of the highest numbers of staff, the security management situation has raised serious concerns,” the Prison Service stated in a Facebook post.

The service plans to conduct a review of the dismissed officers’ activities to determine whether they took any actions for the benefit of the inmates.
