Vilnius residents protest to save Neris riverbanks

A civil action took place in Vilnius on Saturday to protest the development of the Neris riverbanks and the expansion of car infrastructure near the river, LRT reports.

Dozens of protesters gathered on the capital’s Žvėryno Bridge, demanding a halt to what they describe as the intensifying encroachment on the riverbanks. Activists called on city authorities to prioritise the preservation of natural areas and plan urban development in a way that protects the Neris riverbanks.

According to the organisers, current and planned projects—including a new rowing base in Žirmūnai, a private marina complex in Vingis Park, the expansion of the Winter Port, and a residential quarter on Žirmūnų Street—pose the greatest threat to the riverbanks.

“The Neris riverbanks are one of the most important parts of Vilnius’ natural framework, preserving biodiversity, cooling the city, and serving the recreational needs of all residents. The city must develop alongside nature, not at its expense,” said Viltė Zaveckaitė, a member of the climate movement Fridays for Future.

Organisers urged authorities to conduct a comprehensive environmental impact assessment before implementing the projects and to involve independent experts and the public in decision-making.
