Sinkevičius calls Democratic Union the choice Lithuania needs most
Acting leader of the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” and MEP Virginijus Sinkevičius has stated that his party represents the choice the country needs most at this time, LRT reports.
Speaking at a party conference on Saturday, Sinkevičius thanked supporters for their resilience and expressed confidence in future political victories for Lithuania. “Thank you for not giving up. Together, we will create and, together with the people of Lithuania, we will achieve many political victories that Lithuania deserves. Because we are the choice that Lithuania needs most right now,” he said.
The comments follow the spring resignation of former party leader Saulius Skvernelis, who stepped down after prosecutors moved to lift his legal immunity amid a corruption investigation at the State Plant Service. Sinkevičius argued that the party had successfully overcome this challenge, proving it is not dependent on any single individual.
“I believe that today we are turning a new page for our community with a very clear experience: we passed the test,” the MEP said. “You are living proof that this party, this community, has never been and never will be a one-person party. Its backbone—the people who uphold it—are you.”
At the Saturday event in the Vilnius district, party members will elect a permanent chairperson from two candidates: Sinkevičius and Health Minister Lino Kukuraitis.
