Five politicians will compete for the nomination as the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) candidate in the upcoming Kaunas mayoral election, the party confirmed to BNS.

The TS-LKD Kaunas branch council approved the list of candidates on Thursday evening. Among them is civic activist and businessman Šarūnas Jasiukevičius, who secured the most support from the party’s Kaunas branches, with seven out of eight endorsing his candidacy.

Also in the running are Kaunas City Council member Andrijana Filinaitė, nominated by three branches, as well as biophysicist and scientist Rokas Mickus, journalist Dainoras Lukas, and Audronė Baronienė, chair of the Kauno Dainava branch, each backed by one branch.

A total of 21 individuals were initially proposed by TS-LKD Kaunas branches as potential candidates for the mayoral race in Lithuania’s second-largest city.

According to the approved schedule, registration for party supporters eligible to vote in the nomination will take place from August 4 to 20, with the vote itself held on August 29–30 in Kaunas.

TS-LKD states it is the first party in Lithuania to organise open candidate elections, described as “democracy festivals,” allowing not only party members but also supporters who share its values to participate.

Kaunas has been led by Visvaldas Matijošaitis since 2015, running under the “United Kaunas” committee. In the last municipal elections, he was elected in the first round, while the TS-LKD candidate, Vytautas Juozapaitis, finished third with 9.61% of the vote.

Direct mayoral and municipal council elections are scheduled for February–March 2027.
