Scammers defraud Lithuanian residents of around €46,300

Scammers have defrauded residents in various parts of Lithuania out of approximately €46,300, according to a report by the Police Department, as cited by LRT.

In one case, a 76-year-old woman in Vilnius reported that unknown Russian-speaking individuals, posing as employees of Google, a bank, and police officers, deceived her out of €14,000 on Monday around 3 PM. Authorities have launched a pre-trial investigation into the fraud.

Similarly, a 68-year-old woman in Zarasai district reported that on Monday morning around 8 AM, unknown Russian-speaking callers, impersonating bank and police officials, scammed her out of €19,830. Police have gathered evidence for a fraud investigation.

Another incident involved an 85-year-old woman in Vilnius who was contacted on July 20 around 6 PM by unknown Russian-speaking individuals claiming to be telecommunications company and bank employees, as well as police officers. They defrauded her of €1,500. A pre-trial investigation has been initiated for fraud, unauthorised use of electronic payment means or data, and impersonation of a public official.

In a separate case, a private company in Klaipėda reported that on July 2, while attempting to access their bank’s website, €3,000 was unlawfully withdrawn from their account. Authorities are investigating the unauthorised use of electronic payment data.

Additional fraud cases were reported in Biržai and Lazdijai district. In Biržai, a 48-year-old woman transferred money for five tons of granules after seeing an advertisement but never received the goods, resulting in a financial loss of €1,100. In Lazdijai district, a 77-year-old woman in Veisiejai was contacted by an unknown Russian-speaking individual posing as a police officer, who scammed her out of €7,000. Pre-trial investigations have been launched in both cases.
