Plans to build a pool near Vilnius TV Tower that would turn into an ice rink in winter

Vilnius city officials are considering restoring elements of the historic Cosmic Playground near the TV Tower, including a pool for summer use that would convert into an ice rink in winter, reports BNS.

The idea emerged during creative workshops last week, where residents of Karoliniškės and Lazdynai, community representatives, and Telecentras employees discussed the future of a roughly 2-hectare area near the tower.

“As always, before starting any territory renewal projects, we invited residents to co-create the vision for this space—who will use this meadow, what functions and zoning could appear here,” Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas told BNS.

Participants agreed that a playground is essential, with possible water features that could function as pools in summer and an ice rink in winter, he added.

The original Cosmic Playground, designed by architect Viktoras Cholinas between 1979 and 1992, was inspired by coastal sand and waves, with contributions from his daughters Andželika and Greta. However, in 2013, the management of the “Čiauškutis” kindergarten decided to demolish it, citing safety concerns for children with special needs.

“This playground was built improperly—it was unsuitable for children because it was surrounded by walls, damp, and lacked safety materials,” Natalija Lauciuvienė, the kindergarten’s director at the time, told the 15min news portal.

Benkunskas stated that the new playground would not be an exact replica but would modernly reinterpret some of its characteristic colorful elements to preserve an important part of Karoliniškės’ history. Residents also hope for relaxation, leisure, sports infrastructure, picnic areas, and water stations in the space, while maintaining the meadow’s natural feel and improving pathways.

Feedback from the community meeting will be analyzed, and architects from the Vilnius Development Company will prepare a concept for the public space. A return to residents and other stakeholders for further consultations is planned for autumn, with design proposals expected by the end of the year.
