Prime minister calls for trust in law enforcement after teen assault in Marijampolė
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius has called for trust in law enforcement following a violent incident involving teenagers in Marijampolė, reported LRT.lt.
Sinkevičius described the assault, in which a group of minors attacked a girl in Marijampolė’s Poetry Park, as shocking. “The incident truly shocked me, as a father. We must trust the law enforcement institutions to clarify the details,” he said during a visit to the Rūdninkai training ground on Friday.
The prime minister condemned the violence as unjustifiable and stated he would meet with relevant institutions to prevent similar incidents in the future, though he did not specify which ones.
A video of the assault, which occurred on Tuesday evening, circulated on social media. It shows a 13-year-old girl attacking another minor while bystanders record the incident and laugh, failing to intervene. Prosecutors in Marijampolė have launched an investigation into the disturbance of public order. Preliminary reports suggest the conflict stemmed from a social media comment.
