Opposition lawmakers in Lithuania will prepare a document next week to submit to the Constitutional Court regarding the legitimacy of Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius’ government, according to Laurynas Kasčiūnas, leader of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD).

Speaking to Žinių Radijas, Kasčiūnas said the document would be ready within a week, with the aim of collecting the necessary signatures by the end of July to formally appeal to the court.

The opposition argues that Sinkevičius’ government programme was submitted before the cabinet was officially approved, violating constitutional procedures. The programme was registered in the Seimas on July 3, while President Gitanas Nausėda signed the decree confirming the government’s composition on July 6.

Kasčiūnas stated that a Constitutional Court ruling would provide clarity on the formation process, benefiting both the government and the ruling majority. “An appeal to the Constitutional Court would be healthy for our political system, as it would assess the formation process and answer the questions raised,” he said.

The debate follows comments by Vilnius University law professor Egidijus Kūris, who noted that the prime minister had submitted the government programme before the cabinet was confirmed.

Sinkevičius has stated that the programme was presented to the Seimas after the president’s decree was signed. Meanwhile, the leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has accused the opposition of manipulating concepts.

The current ruling coalition consists of the Seimas factions of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, the Democratic Union “For Lithuania,” and the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens, and Christian Families Union.
