A 12-year-old girl was repeatedly struck with a phone and beaten by another teenager in Marijampolė’s Poetry Park on Tuesday evening, with the assault captured on video and shared online, LRT reports.
The victim, who required medical treatment, suffered dozens of blows to the head and body. Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office has launched a pre-trial investigation for public order violations. The suspect, also 12, may be too young to face criminal liability under Lithuanian law, according to Vilma Sakalauskienė, deputy chief prosecutor of Marijampolė district.
Witnesses, including other teenagers, recorded the attack but did not intervene. Locals expressed shock at the brutality and the decision to film and distribute the footage. “This is not just scary, it’s horrifying. I can’t imagine where such cruelty comes from,” one resident told LRT Television.
Child protection services have engaged with both the victim’s and the suspect’s families. The victim has been referred for psychological support. Authorities are reviewing surveillance options in the park, where no such incidents had previously been recorded.
Psychologists note that such violence among adolescents often stems from poor conflict resolution and a lack of understanding of consequences. They urge parents to discuss the incident with their children.
