Nausėda warns of new Russian threats to Lithuania’s critical infrastructure

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has confirmed recent foreign media reports that Russia is planning provocations in Poland or the Baltic states, potentially to test NATO unity, LRT reports.

Citing intelligence data, Nausėda said Russia may target the region’s critical infrastructure using both conventional and other means. He noted that while the signals received from Lithuanian services do not specify exact locations or timings, they indicate deliberate planning.

“We have such signals from our services. They don’t clearly identify the place or time because that’s simply impossible to determine—perhaps the other side isn’t even at the final planning stage. But we know about the planning itself or the intended target,” Nausėda told BNS.

He acknowledged that the information suggests possible kinetic operations, though not on a large scale, likely aimed at critical infrastructure. “These are targeted kinetic operations that could very likely be directed at critical infrastructure objects,” he added.

Nausėda stated that Lithuania has recently strengthened the protection of its critical transport and energy infrastructure. He emphasised the importance of these systems not only for their direct function but also for their role in synchronising with continental Europe.

“Anything that could disrupt the functioning of these objects is significant because the objects themselves are important, and because the entire system—specifically our synchronisation with the continental European system—depends on them,” he said.
