Eleven political parties and one independent candidate, Eduardas Vaitkus, will contest the upcoming by-election in Lithuania’s Nalšia North constituency, according to data from the Central Electoral Commission (VRK).

Registration for participants in the campaign closed on Monday. The parties fielding candidates include the Centre-Right Union, the Democratic Union “For Lithuania”, the Freedom Party, the Liberal Movement, the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance, the Lithuanian Regions Party, the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, the political party “Nemuno Aušra”, the Nation and Justice Union (centrists, nationalists), and the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats.

So far, only the Social Democratic Party has announced it will nominate Vladislavas Kondratovičius, the outgoing interior minister, as its candidate. The names of other parties’ candidates will be confirmed once they submit their registration documents or the party formally registers them as campaign participants.

Under Lithuania’s Electoral Code, unregistered participants cannot take part in elections. Candidates must submit their documents by August 20. The by-election in Nalšia North is scheduled for November 8, following the unexpected death in May of its MP, Jevgenijus Šuklinas.
