Designated environment minister discusses potential audits and forestry restrictions

Ieva Andriulaitytė, the designated environment minister in Mindaugas Sinkevičius’ incoming government, has described her appointment as unexpected but expressed readiness to take on the role, citing her experience in environmental protection and EU affairs.

Speaking to LRT, Andriulaitytė confirmed she had not anticipated the offer but accepted due to her professional background. She noted her long-standing collaboration with Sinkevičius, both in Vilnius and Brussels, which she believes strengthens their working relationship.

When asked about potential requests from the prime minister, Andriulaitytė stated she would assess each demand based on its legality and logic. She asserted she would refuse any improper requests, even at the risk of losing Sinkevičius’ favour, emphasizing she holds her position out of enthusiasm rather than attachment to office.

Regarding audits in ministries previously led by appointees from the “Nemuno aušra” party, Andriulaitytė acknowledged the possibility but said no final decision had been made. She noted public concerns about working conditions, tension, and questionable decisions within the Environment Ministry, adding that any audits—whether operational, financial, or covering a specific period—would be determined after she begins work.

She clarified that her current comments on potential issues within the ministry are based on publicly available information, as she has not yet reviewed internal documents.
