Skapiškis residents lack water supply as solution costs €3 million

Residents of Skapiškis in the Kupiškis district still lack access to a centralised water supply, forcing them to ration every drop, LRT reports.

Some buy water from neighbours, while others rely on wells that dry up during hot summers. Families describe strict water-saving measures, with one resident explaining that children are constantly reminded to conserve water to avoid running out.

Local authorities acknowledge the issue, citing complex geological conditions. Saulius Simanavičius, director of Kupiškio vandenys, said a wastewater treatment plant and a vacuum system are needed due to high groundwater levels. The estimated cost to extend water and sewage networks to all residents is around €3 million, but funding is currently unavailable, including from the EU.

Arūnas Valintėlis, director of the Kupiškis district municipality administration, said not all residents want to connect to the centralised system. For those who do, the company will extend networks to property boundaries, allowing them to join. Work could begin this year.
