Social Democrats may replace Baranovas with Kondratovičius in early elections

The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has informed the Central Electoral Commission of its intention to withdraw Ruslanas Baranovas’ candidacy in the early parliamentary elections for the Nalšia North constituency, LRT reports.

The commission was notified on Thursday morning that the party plans to nominate a different candidate in the constituency. The change must be finalised by July 13.

According to Lrytas.lt, former Interior Minister Vladislavas Kondratovičius is expected to replace Baranovas. When asked by LRT whether he intends to run, Kondratovičius neither confirmed nor denied the possibility.

“I cannot confirm or deny it. Everything will become clear soon. A final decision from the LSDP council is still pending. I think it will be resolved today,” he said.

Kondratovičius stated that, if offered the candidacy, he would be prepared to represent the Nalšia North constituency, citing his extensive experience in both municipal and ministerial roles.

“If I receive such an offer, I am certainly ready. I have significant experience in both municipalities and ministries. I am familiar not only with the specific issues of that region but also with the broader challenges facing the country. This is a border region with its own regional and transport challenges. I believe my experience would be beneficial both to this constituency and to the country as a whole. Being a member of the Seimas means representing the interests of the entire country—a great honour and responsibility,” he said.

The early parliamentary elections in the Nalšia North constituency will take place on November 8, following the unexpected death of MP Jevgenijus Šuklinas in May.

Baranovas, currently an MP elected in 2024 via the LSDP list, had previously faced criticism over his candidacy. His potential nomination sparked public outrage, with constitutional law expert Egidijus Kūris remarking, “The Constitution was not written for tricksters.”

In 2024, Baranovas ran in the Vilnius South constituency, finishing third with 12.72% of the vote and failing to advance to the second round. Meanwhile, in the Nalšia North constituency, LSDP’s candidate, former Zarasai district mayor Nikolajus Gusevas, also finished third with 12.73% of the vote.
