Paramedic murder suspect’s father arrested for one month

Panevėžys District Court on Friday ordered the detention of Egidijus Gaigalas, the father of one of the main suspects in the murder of paramedic Mantas Sadauskas, for one month, LRT.lt reports.
The court ruled that Gaigalas could obstruct the investigation by concealing or destroying evidence, influencing witnesses, or interfering with other participants in the legal process. Prosecutor Lukas Krivickas had requested a two-month detention.
Gaigalas, a doctor and head of the Intensive Care and Resuscitation Department at Biržai Hospital, was brought to the courthouse on Friday morning. He did not respond to journalists’ questions about the allegations or the medications found in his possession.
Prosecutor Krivickas stated that Gaigalas is suspected of involvement in the paramedic’s murder, though investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of his connection. “We are examining whether this is related to the case or not. At this point, I cannot say if it is related,” Krivickas said.
Gaigalas faces additional charges, including the unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition, explosives, or narcotic and psychotropic substances with intent to distribute, as well as the unlawful possession of large quantities of such substances.
During searches of Gaigalas’s home and workplace on Tuesday, authorities reportedly found psychotropic medications and around 50 rounds of various calibres of ammunition, which prosecutors believe may be linked to the criminal activities under investigation.
Gaigalas, born in 1962, is a former member of the Biržai District Municipal Council, first elected in 2007. He ran again in the 2011 municipal elections as a candidate for the Christian Party.
The search for the missing paramedic began on April 20, with his vehicle found the following day. A search of a nearby property that same day led to the discovery of his body. Shortly after, the victim’s wife, her close associate, and her father were detained. Two suspects are currently in custody.
