Father of paramedic murder suspect Sadauskienė brought to court

Egidijus Gaigalas, the father of Justina Sadauskienė (Gaigalaitė), one of the main suspects in the murder of paramedic Mantas Sadauskas, was brought to Panevėžys District Court on Friday morning, LRT.lt reports.

Gaigalas, a doctor and head of the Resuscitation and Intensive Care Unit at Biržai Hospital, was detained on Tuesday. Prosecutors have requested a two-month pre-trial detention for him, citing concerns that he may tamper with evidence or influence witnesses.

“In our opinion, there is a basis for detention—he could obstruct the process by destroying or hiding documents or objects, or by influencing witnesses,” prosecutor L. Krivickas told journalists after the hearing.

Gaigalas faces charges related to the illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, explosives, or narcotic and psychotropic substances, with intent to distribute or in large quantities. Investigators believe psychotropic drugs found during searches of his home and workplace may be linked to the criminal case.

Around 50 rounds of various calibres were also reportedly discovered during the searches.

Prosecutors confirmed that Gaigalas is a suspect in the Sadauskas murder investigation but noted that his direct involvement in the killing remains under examination. “Such versions are being investigated—whether this is connected to the case or not. At this point, I cannot say if it is connected,” Krivickas said.

Gaigalas, born in 1962, is a former member of the Biržai District Municipal Council, first elected in 2007 as a member of the Christian Party. He previously listed his occupation as a physician and declared he was divorced with a daughter, Justina.

The search for Sadauskas began on April 20, after his vehicle was found the following day. His body was later discovered on the property where the car was located. Sadauskas’ widow, her close associate, and her father were subsequently detained. Two suspects are currently in custody.
