Lithuanian court finds Marijampolė mayor guilty in “čekiukai” case, removes him from office

The Lithuanian Court of Appeals has found Marijampolė Mayor Povilas Isoda guilty in the so-called “čekiukai” (checks) corruption case, overturning a previous acquittal by the Kaunas Regional Court, LRT reports.

Isoda has been fined €10,000 and barred from holding elected or appointed office for three years. The decision was announced on Thursday by judge Vitalija Norkūnaitė, who stated that the court had decided to annul the Kaunas Regional Court’s ruling. The case was appealed by prosecutor Darius Valkavičius after Isoda’s initial acquittal.
